Fender 70th Anniversary Broadcaster, Maple Neck, Blackguard Blonde S/N V1971156 7.13lb Debuting in Autumn 1950 the Fender Broadcaster was the original name given to possibly the most famous electric guitar of all time, the Fender Telecaster. It was the much-anticipated follow-on to the Fender Esquire and was the first Fender model to feature a truss rod for improved stability as well as dual pickups for a wide spectrum of tonal possibilities. The Broadcaster name only lasted a few months due to the fact that Gretsch had already trademarked the name ‘BroadKaster’ for one of their drum kit models. By 1951 the Broadcaster name was simply being snipped off and for a short period the guitar was known as the ‘Nocaster’ until eventually in the summer of 1951 it was renamed the ‘Telecaster’. Although only around 250 Telecasters left the Fender factory bearing the Broadcaster name it remains a crucial part of the electric guitar's history. The Fender 70th Anniversary Broadcaster is a faithful reproduction of one of the most important guitars ever to be produced. Strictly Limited to 2020 only it features an Ash body, tastefully finished with nitro in a Blackguard Blonde finish, a thick U-Shaped neck, period-correct hardware and appointments such as a black Phenolic Pickguard and Custom Shop ’50-’51 Blackguard Pickups. Included with this anniversary guitar is a specially Embroided Vintage Tweed Case, Certificate of Authenticity and the Broadcaster Wiring Kit. The guitar also features a commemorative 70th-anniversary neck plate. A timeless guitar in an extremely special package. ’50-’51 Blackguard Pickups The centrepiece to the 70th Anniversary Broadcaster is the Custom Shop designed 50-’51 Blackguard Pickups. The unmistakable tone of these early Fender Broadcasters can easily be pinpointed to the unique pickups found in the famous Black Phenolic Pickguard and Steel Bridge plate. The pickups still produce that characteristical twang that we all love and associate from Blackguard Teles but embellishes it with a more punchy low end, more prominent mids and an airier top end. Bold and open sounding the Custom Shop Designed ’50-’51 Blackguard Neck Pickup and Custom Shop Hand-Wound ’50-’51 Bridge Pickup are perfect for bringing out the natural sustain and lively sound of the Ash body and Maple neck found on the Broadcaster. U-Shaped Neck To many, one of the most well known and loved features of early Fenders is the thick U-Shaped neck. No matter where you are on the neck, its prominent neck profile remains attached to your hand at all times making for the most connected playing experience. You can feel the natural resonance and vibration of the guitar directly in your hand. Its thick profile also helps to add plenty of natural sustain. To some, the idea of using a thick neck seems completely counterintuitive however although thick, the neck does remain comfortable whatever it is you are doing and can, in fact, help your hand and wrist fall into a more natural playing position. Broadcaster Wiring Kit When the Broadcaster shipped out in 1950 the wiring was quite different from the standard Tele that we all know and love. The original Broadcaster ‘blend’ wiring featured the famous ‘dark circuit’ in the neck position, the open neck pickup in the middle position and in the bridge position you can blend in the neck pickup using the 2nd control knob. The 70th Anniversary Broadcaster comes as standard with the usual telecaster wiring, however, included in the case is an original Broadcaster wiring kit.
