Epiphone Sheraton-II Pro Vintage Sunburst

A Brief History Of Epiphone And The Sheraton

The Epiphone Sheraton symbolises a pivotal stage in Epiphone’s history. Following a tumultuous few years and a 4-month-long strike, Epiphone was forced to relocate from it’s home in New York to Philadelphia and were swiftly bought out by their rivals, Gibson. The two companies had been battling for arch-top supremacy for decades but difficult financial circumstances acted as the catalyst to bring them together.

Once they were together, utilising the combined wisdom of engineers from both of the companies, they designed and created the Electric Spanish, or ES, series of guitars. These guitars, such as the iconic ES-335, were produced under the Gibson brand and were hugely successful. They have become just as timeless as the Stratocaster, Telecaster, or Les Paul.

That was the story for Gibson but Epiphone needed some magic desperately. Just before the merger with Gibson in 1957, they were in trouble. There was a lot of speculation and fear that Epiphone was bound to fold at any moment. After the merger with Gibson, however, just one year later in 1958, Epiphone released the Sheraton. The Sheraton served as a glowing beam of hope that swiftly quashed those rumours that Epiphone were doomed and it acted as a proud flag-bearer for a brand with a new, sturdy footing, and a bright new focus, ready to offer guitarists something truly great.

What Makes The Sheraton II Different From Original The Sheraton

The Sheraton has been through a number of design changes since it’s birth in 1958. Originally, it was made in America, in the Gibson factory, using predominantly Gibson parts. In 1970 production was stopped in America and moved to Japan. This was accompanied by a few changes to the design that was continuously tweaked throughout the years. It moved from having mini-humbuckers to full-sized humbuckers.

The Sheraton II was introduced in 1986. The main difference between it and its predecessor was the bridge. Epiphone opted for a more traditional fixed stop-tail style rather than the previous ‘Frequensator’ style that they dabbled with before. The Sheraton II was the distilling of what worked on the previous model and acted as a more stable offering of the best of the previous design tweaks. It was hugely popular upon its release, it is still in production today, and has remained practically completely unchanged throughout.

Epiphone’s New Groove

The Sheraton delivers bluesy, soulful warmth with the signature robust breathiness that Epiphone’s semi-hollow construction has become known for. However, it is far from a one-trick pony. It can also deliver big, powerful driving tones when turned up and can soften enormously for beautiful jazz tones whenever necessary. It’s an incredibly flexible instrument which is at home in virtually any environment.

It’s versatility, along with its aforementioned show-stopping looks, really helped propel it into high-regard and also into the hands of many famous guitarists. John Lee Hooker famously used the Sheraton as his main guitar for most of his career, calling it “an out-did 335”. Alongside Mr. Hooker are other such famous players as Noel Gallagher (of Oasis), Matthew Followill (the lead guitarist for Kings of Leon), and Ezra Koenig (of Vampire Weekend).

Punching Above Its Weight

If you’re looking for a guitar that looks as good as it sounds for half the price of its Gibson cousins, then look no further. This guitar is a great all-rounder. It can perform extremely well in any scenario. It also, as I’ve mentioned many times, is eye-wateringly pretty. It’s a truly great guitar which played an integral part in revitalising Epiphone as a serious contender as one of the guitar heavyweights once more!
