J Rockett Boing Classic Deluxe Spring Reverb Guitar Effects Pedal

How to Hold a Cathedral in Your Hands

Reverb is a key ingredient in the recipe of most guitarists' tone. It is a gorgeous, near essential marinade in which to bathe your playing. It is the sound of an expanse of space giving your guitar room to breath, swell, and bloom. Traditionally, the way to generate this sound would have been to put your guitar amp in a Cathedral or a cave and record the result. This is a fairly impractical solution it must be said and severely limits the venues in which you’d be able to play live!

To bring the majesty of reverberation to the masses, a few companies got to work and invented alternatives to simulate the huge expansive sound. One of the most popular techniques is spring reverb. With this method, a spring is stretched gently in a space with a transducer on one end and a pickup on the other. The sound passes through the spring slower than through the amp and each note decays as the spring calms down. This simulates the sound of playing in a large space in a really pretty, slightly metallic, slightly wobbly way. Pretty early on, Fender latched onto this technology and started housing it within their combo amplifiers from the early ‘60s.

Surf’s Up!

Fender amps, already illustrious and widely used, became even more prolific. The reverb tanks were first added into Fender’s “brownface” amps but are best known for being in the body of their “blackface” range. The addition of these reverb tanks in these combos helped make them an essential companion for a myriad of gigging musicians and studio producers alike. Critically though, the arrival of this technology coincided pretty much simultaneously with the arrival of the surf rock craze which swept America at that time. To hear the splash and flutter of a spring reverb tank in full force, listen to surf music from the early ‘60s. That’s spring reverb to the extreme.

Surf music was not the only thing the spring reverb tanks in Fender’s amps were used for by any means. Amps like the Fender Twin, Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, and Princeton have been recorded more times than you can shake a stick at across an enormous range of genres. Their signature spring reverb flutter has become synonymous with blues, pop, and R&B music to name a few. This tone, the soft flutter that’s so desirable from amps like the Deluxe Reverb, is exactly what the Boing from J Rockett harnessed as its inspiration.

Springful Springlessness

Authentically emulating the character and response of a spring reverb tank is not an easy task. In a real tank, each note triggers a physical, analog reaction which is an incredibly difficult thing to approximate with circuitry. J Rockett have managed it in their Boing pedal though. All of the distinctive flutter and warble you’d expect to find in a classic Fender amp can be found inside this little metal box and there’s not a spring in sight.

The Boing is part of J Rockett’s tour range of pedals. The main ethos behind this range is simplicity and ease of use. The Boing encapsulates this brilliantly as it only features a solitary, central knob. This knob simply controls the amount of reverb. Everything from a subtle wash of resonance to full on Dick Dale surf splash is possible just by twisting that knob to the left or right. The spring effect is uncanny too. All of the flutter, splash, warble, and spank is present which, again, is not an easy task.

Should You Spring for the Boing?

If you want to add a Fender voiced spring reverb tank to any amp, this is the pedal for you. Spring reverb in general has a beautiful character which has a place in any style of guitar playing. At more subtle levels, the warbly, quirky twang subsides and the pedal simply provides a nice thickening wash of resonance. However, should you want it, bags of splashy twangle (which is a technical term) is readily available at the twist of a knob.
