Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe Drive Pedal
Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Pedal
Wampler has taken their classic “Plexi-Drive” and deluxificated it. All the original vintage Marshall® channeling goodness is retained whilst providing some extra tweaks in the name of versatility. With the addition of a 3-way active EQ, bright switch, and boost functionality, the Plexi-Drive Deluxe has reached new heights of control.
The Plexi Sound
The Plexi sound is one of the most coveted guitar tones in history. It is a sound made famous by a number of lesser-known, two-bit players such as Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young, Eric Clapton, and Eddie Van Halen; all of whom provide fantastic examples of the eye-watering beauty and power of those early Marshall® behemoths.
The “Plexi” part of the Plexi sound refers to the Plexiglass backing to the control panel on the very early Marshall® amps. It is an iconic aesthetic staple adorning the amps they were producing in the mid-to-late-60’s which had a clear Acrylic panel, backed with a strip of gold tape, as the backing to the control panel. These early amps from Marshall® are very well-regarded and extremely sought after. They fetch a pretty penny nowadays on the second-hand market and have spawned a plethora of pedals and amps that try to capture that heavenly sound.
Capturing The Tone
The Plexi-Drive Deluxe from Wampler captures all of the flavour and character present within all the amps of that period and distills it into a single pedal. You get the signature crunch, response, and feeling that those early amps provided across the gamut. The unique gain structure of the Plexi-Drive Deluxe allows for really authentic recreations of everything from the beautiful Vintage ’68 style amps to the all-out screaming rock tones of a JTM-45® cranked all the way.
What Makes It “Deluxe”?
The first and most noticeable new addition to the Plexi-Drive Deluxe is the 3-band-EQ, allowing you to dial in your ideal, unique tone with utmost precision. Alongside this, you also have a bass boost switch which helps to further capture the authenticity of that Marshall® sound by simulating the thump of a 4x12 cabinet. This feature goes hand-in-hand with the new “Bright” switch which allows you to adjust to brighter or darker sounding guitars in a jiffy.
A pre-gain, soft-click boost switch is also present on the pedal. It kicks in a boost signal very reminiscent to a certain little green overdrive pedal which helps to kick any sound over the edge. The Marshall® and Screamer combo goes together about as well as strawberries and cream.
