Way Huge Smalls Overrated Special Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal

Killer Drive

The Overrated Special by Way Huge, like most overdrive pedals, can trace its lineage back to the Tube Screamer. This particular pedal, however, is certainly not a mere Tube Screamer clone. It has a voice all of its own.

The Origins of the Overrated Special

The story starts with the longtime Way Huge player and lover Joe Bonamassa. As he transferred from a predominantly Marshall setup over to one based more firmly in vintage tweed Fender amps he found that his current line-up of pedals were not quite giving him what he was looking for anymore. He recruited his good friend and collaborator Jeorge Tripps (the mastermind behind Way Huge) to help him narrow down upon and create the perfect overdrive pedal to make his new array of vintage Fender amps sing just as he knew they could. The two of them started with the Green Rhino pedal (which is essentially Way Huge’s version of a modded Tube Screamer style circuit). Jeorge then set about tweaking and refining the design further to their shared specifications until it was just right. The result of their endeavour is the Overrated Special.

The Tone

Whilst the pedal could be described as a mid-focused overdrive, it has its own identity. Compared to other such pedals, it tends to offer a little more in the way of focus and grit. There’s more of a punch to its sound as opposed to the sag one might expect from a traditional Tube Screamer style pedal. It’s the perfect partner to an amp on the verge of breakup. It’ll give you a really tasty, colourful push with bags of character.

One of the things that makes this pedal so difficult to pin down is its clever flexibility. It can be used before a clean amp to provide a kick of grit and punch or it can be put in-front of an already pushed amp to slam it into harder levels of distortion. This flexibility is achieved through a combination of its stellar design and the controls at your fingertips.

With the volume and drive controls, you can dial in any amount of dirt and tailor it to suit the amp or the style of music you’re aiming for. These controls are powerful, dynamic, and versatile. Where things get really interesting though is in the two controls below the two main knobs. On the left you have the “freq” or frequency control. This allows you to move the focus of the traditional mid-push that’s aimed at 500Hz. This knob is really powerful as it hugely increases the pedals dynamism. By turning the frequency control from the middle, you can manoeuvre the 500Hz hump around in the frequency spectrum to help you to push up the low-mids or to help to tailor the pedal to a particular guitar or amp. You also have a master tone control which helps to shape the whole overall EQ to suit different flavours of guitar, amp, and music genre.

The Overrated Special Smalls from Way Huge is an all round drive powerhouse. It’s particular style of drive is really pretty and gritty all at once. Fans of Bonamassa’s blistering, beautiful lead tones will instantly be drawn to it. What’s more, with its recent reincarnation in the “smalls” enclosure, it can now be fitted much easier onto a far wider array of pedal-boards. If you’re in the market for a new drive pedal, you owe it to yourself to check one of these out.
