Way Huge Smalls Russian Pickle Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal

An Abomination is Born

In the ‘90s a pedal appeared. Spawned from within the belly of an old Russian military equipment factory helmed by two Russian colonels, the Green Russian Big Muff from EHX surfaced. It took the grunge scene by storm and quickly found its way onto pedal boards in the burgeoning underground aggressive music scenes of the era. Since then the pedal has become very widely used and regarded as a classic in the EHX family of Big Muff fuzz pedals. The Russian Pickle from Way Huge is mastermind Joerge Tripps’ homage to the classic Russian brute. It packs all the wallop of its spiritual predecessor all with the signature Way Huge polish and attention to detail.

The Nature of the Beast

There are a few key features a Sovtek Russian style fuzz must possess and the Russian Pickle possesses them well and truly. The features are tonal characteristics which voice the pedal to be less articulate. The sound is more powerful with less of a focus on clarity in the high-end and more of a focus on force and body in the bottom-end. The bass and low-mids this circuit can put out is almost intimidating. It’s perfect for sludgy, driving guitar (or bass) lines designed to test the foundations of the building they are emanating from within.

Relentless

The second notable tonal touch-point embodied by Russian style fuzz pedals is their smoothness. The notes will sustain beautifully with a roundness that is more pronounced than in some of their American counterparts. Again, the sludgy more powerful nature of the pedal lends itself to continuous thick and amorphous style of tone.

Not a One Trick Monster

Although the Russian Pickle by Way Huge embodies all of the classic punch and weight one would expect from a Russian style fuzz, it doesn’t mean that that is all that it is good for. You’ve got a simple set of controls to contend with but they can produce a good array of different tones with different flavours. The tone knob in particular can be used to take away any high-end focus to leave an even creamier sound, or it can be used to add back in a certain level of grit and articulation. The volume and distortion controls are also integral to sculpting how hard you want the pedal to kick you in the guts.

Miniaturising the Russian Brute

Although the pedal has been shrunk to new miniature proportions it doesn’t mean there’s less to be wary of. This pedal, even in its new Smalls enclosure, still uses the exact same original circuitry from the original bigger standard Way Huge Russian Pickle. That means you get all the bare-knuckle fire and belly in a smaller, more condensed package which is far more suitable to fit onto any pedal-board.
