Way Huge Supa-Puss Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal

Pushing Boundaries

Delay is one of the quintessential effects that can be found on almost every guitarists board. Whether being used to emulate slap-back room echo or dialled up to create other-worldly swimming ambient realms, delay is an invaluable tool for almost any occasion. Analog delay is one of the desirable types of delay thanks to its beautiful dark texture and natural sounding bloom and decay. Analog delay is capable of producing its beautiful musical soul through its reliance on physical analog components and wiring. Things done the old school way. Although this creates such pretty and sought after tonality, it comes at the cost of versatility. Typically, analog delays have fairly short repeat times, a fairly one dimensional sound, and limited deep interactive opportunities. The Supa-Puss from Way Huge sets out to change that.

Time Consuming

First and foremost, the Supa-Puss offers longer delay times than typically seen. Way Huge’s other delay offering, the Aqua-Puss, maxes out at 300ms. The Supa-Puss triples that to top out at 900ms. This is a huge amount of time in the world of analog delay pedals. The Supa-Puss achieves this by cramming six bucket brigade chips into its body. This ensures longer delay time possibilities whilst ensuring full and proper analog tonal goodness.

Compartmentalising

Secondly, the Supa-Puss boasts some really cool subdivision options. You’ve got a great number of subdivision types to choose from including dotted eighth, triplet patterns and a few others. Each of these types is selectable by pressing down the “feedback” control. You can choose which one you’d like, or, you can let the pedal choose for you. If you press and hold the feedback control for 3-4 seconds, the pedal enters “chase” mode. This mode has the pedal switch at will between the modes to create some really trippy, far-out patterns of swell that stutters and shifts between various feelings. You can set the speed at which the pedal switches between modes with the tap-tempo footswitch, but otherwise, all control is relinquished and you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Oscillation

Thirdly, the pedal offers oscillation controls. This creates watery undulations over the delay tone to add a little extra depth and movement. Underneath the main “delay” control, there are two mini-controls labelled “depth” and “speed”. Dialling up these controls allows you to bring in a shimmering chorus/vibrato style textures atop everything else you have going on. The depth knob controls how severe the undulations are and speed control sets the rate at which they move through your sound.

Grit

To the right of the subdivision options is a control labelled “gain”. This control allows you to add dirt into your tone. This simple control colours the sound to add a little more darkness and edge. This is a pretty unique option to be found on a delay pedal but really helps to cement that dark and gnarly texture one would expect from an analog style delay.

Tap

Last but not least you have a tap-tempo control. This is something rarely seen on analog delays due to the difficulty in authentically integrating it into the circuit. This control allows you to easily and naturally set the rate of delay without having to fiddle with the control dial to get as close as possible. Setting the delay with the dial is a rather static and rudimentary way of setting the amount of time between each repetition. You get a rough abstract sense of where the delays are sitting and it stays there until you adjust it again. It also requires a free hand which means you have to stop playing whilst making any adjustments. With the tap tempo option you can use your foot to tap in the rate you want the delays to sit at. Tapping your foot along with the beat of the music will set the delay time to be perfectly in-sync with your surroundings. This is a fantastic feature to have and it’s made all the more usable by not diminishing the outstanding analog quality of the existing delay.

No Stone Left Unturned

The Supa-Puss from Way Huge is a really great evolution of what an analog delay can be expected to do. At its core, Way Huge’s knowhow and wizardry makes for a beautiful and rich analog delay tone which is a delight in and of itself. On top of that, Way Huge have laced longer delay times, a tap tempo control, gain functionality, modulation, subdivision choices, randomisation of subdivisions, trail toggling, and many more I’m sure I’ve neglected to mention. It is a formidable pedal for the kind of guitarist who wants options and flexibility without compromising on base tone and character. It can be as simple and straightforward as you’d like, or you can get very granular and create a totally unique space-aged tone hitherto unheard! This is a pedal all about options without over facing the user or shortchanging the tone in any way.
