Roland FP-40 vs Roland FP-30X: What's New?

With the launch of the Roland FP-40 on 1st September 2026, one of Roland's most successful digital piano ranges, the FP-30 (FP-30 and FP-30x), is officially being retired. The FP-30X has been a favourite with beginners, teachers and experienced players alike for several years, so it's no surprise that one of the first questions we're being asked is:

Is the Roland FP-40 a worthwhile upgrade?

The short answer is yes. While the familiar playing experience remains, Roland has introduced significant improvements to the sound engine, speaker system, connectivity and learning features that make the FP-40 a noticeably more capable instrument.

A New Piano Reality Sound Engine

The biggest improvement is Roland's new Piano Reality sound engine.

While the FP-30X already produced an excellent piano tone, the FP-40 delivers a more detailed and expressive sound with smoother tonal transitions and a more natural decay. The result is an instrument that feels even closer to playing an acoustic piano, particularly when using subtle dynamics and pedal control.

Whether you're practising classical music or playing contemporary pieces, the piano simply responds more naturally to your touch.

Improved Speaker Design

Roland has also redesigned the internal speaker system.

Rather than relying on a conventional speaker layout, the FP-40 features newly engineered speaker enclosures that produce a wider, fuller sound with noticeably greater depth in the bass.

This is one of the most obvious improvements you'll notice when playing the instrument in person. The sound fills the room more effectively and provides a richer listening experience without the need for external speakers.

The Same Excellent Keyboard, Even Better Response

The FP-40 continues to use Roland's highly regarded PHA-4 Standard keyboard, which remains one of the best key actions available at this price point.

However, Roland has refined the touch response by introducing newly optimised touch curves that have been specifically matched to the Piano Reality sound engine.

The result is a more expressive playing experience, allowing finer control over dynamics while retaining the familiar feel that made the FP-30X so popular.

Modern USB-C Connectivity

The FP-40 also brings Roland's connectivity up to date.

A single USB-C cable can now:

  • Transfer MIDI data.
  • Send digital audio directly to your computer or tablet.
  • Charge your connected mobile device.

For musicians creating YouTube videos, online lessons or livestreams, the addition of headset microphone support is another welcome improvement, making it easier to produce professional-quality recordings with minimal equipment.

Piano Sphere: A Completely New Learning Experience

Perhaps the most exciting addition is Roland's new Piano Sphere learning platform.

Developed in partnership with Skoove, Piano Sphere offers an interactive learning experience that goes far beyond traditional lesson apps.

The FP-40 includes a dedicated Piano Sphere button, allowing instant access to guided lessons, while built-in Wi-Fi enables the piano to monitor practice sessions and help you build consistent playing habits.

Features include:

  • Personalised lesson plans.
  • Interactive learning.
  • Practice streak tracking.
  • A growing library of songs.
  • Optional access to more than 1,000 additional pieces.

For beginners especially, this makes the FP-40 much more than simply a digital piano. It becomes a complete learning system.

Should You Upgrade from the FP-30X?

If you already own an FP-30X, there's certainly no need to rush out and replace it. It remains an excellent digital piano.

However, if you're looking for:

  • Better onboard sound
  • Improved speaker performance
  • Modern USB-C connectivity
  • Easier video recording and streaming
  • Roland's latest Piano Sphere learning platform

then the FP-40 represents a worthwhile step forward.

For anyone buying their first digital piano, we'd recommend choosing the FP-40 over the outgoing FP-30X, as it incorporates Roland's latest technologies and is better equipped for both learning and long-term enjoyment.
