JHS Pedals EHX Green Russian Pi “Moscow Mod” Guitar Pedal Once Upon A Time, In Soviet Russia One of Electro Harmonix most iconic pedals is their Big Muff Fuzz. It has been used prolifically since its creation in the ’60s by some very heavy hitters. It has, however, gone through a few different costume changes in its time, each of which have come part and parcel with their own tonal characteristics. One of the stand-out iterations of this classic pedal was the Sovtek or “Green Russian” Big Muff. Looking like something forged from scraps of an exploded Russian tank, this pedal burst onto the scene and quickly established its footing as a cult classic. It had featured an extreme amount of gain and was muddier than the other pedals in its family tree. It featured more bass and more punch. More recently, it was resurrected from the dead by Electro Harmonix in a smaller, sleeker body. Despite its new, friendlier appearance, however, the reissued Russian Big Muff still packed all the wallop of the original. Too Close To The Blast Radius JHS, well-known for their pedal modding capabilities, have turned their attention to this Soviet classic and carried out a slew of modifications. The changes to the appearance of the pedal are quite drastic. Perhaps the pedal was a bit too close to Chernobyl on that fateful day and, as a result, it’s sprouted a few extra appendages. The First Appendage, The “Mode” Switch There are two mini-toggle-switches on the left-hand side and on the other is a knob. The top-left switch is a “RADS” toggle. This works in tandem with the 3-way-toggle-switch below, the “Mode” switch. The middle position on the “Mode” switch is the pedal in its natural form. Nothing changed from the standard “Green Russian”. When the toggle-switch it flicked downwards, you’re in mode 1. This mode gives you a lower-gain sound. It’s a gated fuzz that is reminiscent of a synth-type sound. A little tamer than the stock mode and designed to be experimented with all the knobs to create your own unique sound. With the toggle-switch flicked upwards, you’re in mode 2. This mode injects a little extra nuclear waste into the mix and turns the pedal into a radioactive monster. The gain rockets up to unheard levels and also a pretty intense level of oscillation is unleashed. This mode is not for the faint of heart so have your hazmat suit at the ready. The Second Appendage, The “RADS” Switch The top left switch mentioned earlier is the “RADS” switch. This dictated the amount of reactivity present within the pedal. It controls the amount of aggression and control you have over the sound you’re getting. It’s a +/- toggle to either reign in the pedal to get it under control or add fuel to the fire (or rods to the reaction) setting it loose with new levels of fury and insanity. The Third Appendage, The Geiger Knob On the right-hand side of the pedal is the “Geiger Knob”. This is the third of the extra limbs JHS have fused on. This knob acts as a gain knob for the inbuilt feedback within the pedal. Turning the knob clockwise enables the feedback in full-force. Anti-clockwise reverts the feedback feature to stock. In Soviet Russia, Fuzz Pedals You The JHS modded Green Russian Pi is really tasteful. It doesn’t commandeer the pedal and turn it into something else entirely. You can have the pedal set completely stock if you should so wish. You can, however, take a trip into the bowels of Chernobyl and let-loose a screaming, radioactive beast. Or pop some iodine pills, calming the pedal into a tamer, lower gain, synth sounding experiment machine. From authentic, low-level, 60’s fuzz to all-out nuclear war, the Moscow Mod Green Russian does it all. Why Bonners? Here at Bonners Music, you have the opportunity to try one of these great JHS effects pedals yourself. Just give us a call on 01323 636141 or better still, visit our showroom! HIGH QUALITY ACCOMPANIMENT STYLES There is no doubt that the arranger styles found in Yamaha instruments are amongst the very best you'll hear from any keyboard, and the PSR-SX900 certainly doesn't disappoint. Many of the styles are taken directly from the flagship Genos keyboard, but it doesn't stop there. Yamaha has included a whole lot more styles which are new and unique to the PSR-SX900. INTUITIVE TOUCHSCREEN OPERATION The functions of the PSR-SX900 are easy to navigate using the simple and familiar touchscreen interface. Finding your way around the menus is a simple matter, and the additional six assignable 'soft keys' located under the screen allows you to jump directly to the pages you use the most with a single press. The PSR-SX-900 may be a mid-range model, but unlike other manufacturers, Yamaha has not cut down on the number of hardware buttons in order to save costs. Popular functions such as 'sustain' and 'left hold' are accessible directly from the front panel, without the need to go digging into the menu system. Located to the left of the panel are two 'live control' knobs which can be assigned to your favourite functions, such as filter cutoff, effect depth, part volume, attack, and many others. CHORD LOOPER Found a nice set of chords and just want to 'jam' around? Learning a difficult passage and need to practice the right-hand part independently? The chord looper function is for you! The chord looper instantly memorises a set of chords you play in realtime and then endlessly loops them whilst you jam around or practice a melody line over the top. This feature is particularly useful for songwriters, as well as students learning challenging musical passages. AUDIO & MIDI RECORDING Instantly record your performance using the onboard song recorders. Audio recording allows you to record in .WAV format directly to a USB memory device for easy sharing with your friends or family. You can also overdub extra parts using the audio recording function, although these are not editable once recorded. MIDI recording allows you to create compositions made up of up to 16 different instrument tracks. This is a true onboard multitrack recording studio with onboard individual note editing which allows you to correct mistakes or re-record parts as and when required. When you are happy with your masterpiece, songs recorded using the MIDI recording feature can be converted to audio for simple sharing with other people or publishing to the web. BLUETOOTH AUDIO STREAMING The built-in Bluetooth connectivity allows you to stream your favourite music tracks through the SX-900's powerful speaker system. Use this to play along to backing tracks, or simply for listening pleasure. EXPANSION MEMORY In addition to the 4GB of memory allocated to the high-quality preset sounds, there is an additional 1GB of free space for you to install downloadable sound expansion packs from the manufacturer website. OTHER USEFUL FEATURES Audio link multipads gives the ability to fire off samples using the four multipad buttons - add real-life audio to your performances. The arpeggiator can be sync'd to the tempo of the internal styles to add more grooves and rhythmic phrases to your performance. The high-resolution touchscreen can be output to an external monitor for easier viewing (with the use of a commercially available USB adaptor) - especially useful if you're singing along to the lyrics display. The powerful vocal harmony (VH2 standard) processor adds studio-quality effects to a vocal microphone input, as well as authentic vocal harmony based upon the chords being played on the keyboard, or can be controlled by one of the song tracks. The PSR-SX900 is loaded with a total of 1393 high-quality voices, of which 252 are Super Articulation, meaning they capture all the nuances of the real instruments. The new joystick controller gives full four-way X-Y control over pitch bend, modulation and other assignable characteristics of the voices.
