Yamaha Upright Acoustic Pianos

The Yamaha Upright Piano range consists of a variety of models catering for all budgets and individual requirements. Each instrument is categorised within a series, which can be identified by the letters within the model code. As an example, a Yamaha “B3” is part of the “B Series”.

When choosing your piano, there are two main factors to take into consideration; height, and quality. Taller upright pianos have longer bass strings, and as a result, a more full, rounded sound and longer sustain. The quality of each piano is simply determined by the series in which it belongs. There are a total of 13 models in the Yamaha upright piano range, and these are grouped within 6 series.

B Series

The B Series was developed in Japan, but these pianos are manufactured in a specially designed Yamaha-owned factory in Indonesia. This series provides Yamaha Quality at affordable prices.

The entry-level model in the B series is the B1. At 109cm in height and 148cm wide, it is a compact entry-level model. It has a contemporary cabinet design and slim profile, with a laminated soundboard.

Next up is the B2, which features a solid spruce soundboard, allowing the sound vibrations to travel more easily than through a laminated soundboard. At 113cm tall, it has a traditional cabinet and castors to allow easy repositioning.

The flagship model of the B series is the B3, which comes in at 121cm in height. The longer strings create more depth and a rounder tone. Five back posts provide additional stability to the structure of the piano. The B3 uses the same design, body, frame and bridge as the popular Japanese-built U1 model, which you can find out more about further down.

All the B series pianos are available with the Yamaha SG2 silent system for quiet practice using headphones.

P Series

The P series has been designed specifically for the European market. Built in Indonesia with a classic cabinet design, the back posts and soundboard are made from European spruce. There are two models in this range, which feature slightly different designs; the P116, which is 116cm in height, and the P121, at 121cm in height (the same height as a B3 or U1). The P121 has a two-piece top lid, which can be opened to allow the full range of sound to be heard. Both P Series models are available with the upgraded Yamaha SH silent system, which features audio recording as well as bi-naural sampling for a truly authentic experience when practicing using headphones.

U Series

Yamaha’s U Series upright pianos are the first models that are both designed and manufactured in Japan. The construction process, components & materials, and performance are all an improvement from the B and P Series instruments.

The U1 model is 121cm tall, which is the same height as a B3 or P121. The improvement in tone and touch is clearly noticeable however, as a result of the higher quality components and manufacturing process.

The U3 stands at 131cm tall, and offers a more full-bodied tone. This particular model is extremely popular thanks to its light, responsive touch matched with its impressive, full sound. The U3 also comes equipped with a sostenuto pedal, which is traditionally found exclusively on grand pianos.

Both U Series models are available with Yamaha’s SH silent system, and the U1 is also available as either a Transacoustic or Disklavier piano.

YUS Series

The YUS Series is based on the standard U Series, but has superior voicing, hammer felts, and strings. The superior voicing simply means that the piano’s tone has been fine-tuned specifically to meet the requirements of each individual piano. Superior hammer felts and strings also improve the tone and provide more stability. There are three models altogether in the YUS Series.

The YUS1 measures 121cm, the same height as the standard U1. Along with superior voicing, felts, and strings, the YUS1 also features an improved cabinet design and double castors for easier repositioning and moving of the piano.

The YUS3 measures 131cm tall, the same height as the U3. The difference lies in the superior voicing, hammer felts and strings, along with the improved cabinet design and double castors.

The YUS5 sits at the top of the YUS Series, and builds on the qualities of the YUS3. It is the same height, at 131cm, but has a larger music desk with mahogany-panelled front vent, which can be opened to immerse the player in the sound. It also features Ivorite keys, which recreate the texture of a traditional ivory piano keyboard.

All YUS series models are available with Yamaha’s SH silent system or Transacoustic systems. The YUS1 is also available as a self-playing Disklavier model.

SE Series

The SE Series upright pianos from Yamaha are premium hand-made pianos with European design and voicing. They have genuine Bosendorfer bass strings. Bosendorfer pianos are renowned for having an exquisite bass, with a rich, warm sound and long sustain, and the SE Series Yamaha pianos are able to boast this feature. The SE Series soundboards are made from European spruce, and the hammers are also European.

Both pianos in this series represent the same premium quality, with the SE122 measuring 122cm tall, and the SE132 measuring 132cm – Yamaha’s tallest upright. Both are available with silent systems installed, and the SE132 is also equipped with a sostenuto pedal.

SU7

Without doubt Yamaha’s finest upright, and one of the best uprights you will come across. The SU7 is Yamaha’s flagship premium upright piano, and is hand-made with the highest quality materials by master craftsmen in their Japanese factory.

With a pure and clear bass, warm tenor and a sparkle in the treble, you could be mistaken for thinking you are playing a grand piano – in fact this model is often closely compared to the 6 foot Yamaha C3 Grand Piano. This is also thanks to the key length being the same as what you would expect to find in a grand piano. The result is a wide range of expression, from pianissimo to fortissimo, that you would usually only encounter playing a Grand piano.

The SU7 is available with Yamaha’s SH silent system for practice without disturbing others in the household or neighbours.

Dimensions & Weight Width 148cm Height 109cm Depth 54cm Weight: 174kg (384lbs) Why Buy A Silent Piano Instead Of A 'Normal' Piano? The Yamaha B1 SC2 Silent piano is exactly the same as its standard acoustic counterpart, but with the convenience of digital technology when you need it. The touch, feel and response is the same as a normal acoustic piano when in standard acoustic mode. When you play using headphones, the hammers are prevented from hitting the strings and the digital sound is activated which the player can hear using headphones. Silent Pianos were first launched by Yamaha in 1993 and the digital technology and key sensors have been constantly improved. The latest SC2 models feature the digital sound of two concert grand pianos, use grayscale technology to maintain keyboard feel, and are compatible with mobile devices and the latest music making Apps. Play The Sound Of Two World-Class Concert Grands The Yamaha B1 SC2 Silent Piano System features the voices of both Yamaha CFX and Bosendorfer Imperial Concert Grand pianos. Each of the 88 keys of these two distinctly different instruments has been recorded (sampled) individually. When using headphones, the player will experience playing each of these grand pianos with the very best clarity and response possible. The CFX is a bold, bright piano, ideal for popular, jazz and light classics, whilst the Bosendorfer Imperial has a more 'European' rounded, mellow voice and is ideal for delicate classics or a full blown concert performance. Other Instrument Voices The Yamaha B1 SC2 silent piano features a total of 10 instrument voices including electric pianos, harpsichords, organs, strings choir and synth pad. These are all useful voices for the modern musician and allows you to find the perfect voice for your style of performance. The Touch Of A Standard Acoustic Piano The Yamaha B1 SC2 SIlent piano uses an exclusive continuous-detection grayscale shutter key sensor. These are fitted under every one of the 88 keys to detect movement, and these sensors do not actually touch the keys, to the player will not feel any discernible difference between a standard acoustic piano and a Yamaha silent piano. Enhanced headphone output with Binaural sampling (CFX voice only) The CFX piano sound uses bi-naural sampling technology when played through headphones - this gives a surround sound type experience when using standard hifi headphones. Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) When using the Yamaha B1 SC2 piano in 'silent' mode, Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) calculates the string and damper resonance in realtime to give the most authentic, life-like playing experience even when using headphones. Smart Pianist App Yamaha's Smart Pianist App is a free download which allows you to access popular functions such as voice selection, metronome settings, or even display musical scores using your smart devices such as tablets & smartphones. The UD-WL01 Wireless Lan adaptor (sold separately) is required to connect Smart Pianist over a wireless network. Simplistic Control Panel Design In order to maintain the traditional look of a beautiful acoustic piano, the control panel on the Yamaha B1 SC2 silent piano is simple and unobtrusive. Operation of the silent system is user-friendly. USB to HOST with Audio Streaming The Yamaha B1 SC2 silent piano is fitted with a USB to HOST socket which allows you to record high quality audio to an external computer or other device without needing an additional USB audio interface. AUX In Connection The AUX IN Connection on the Yamaha B1 SC2 silent piano enables you to listen to or play along with the sound from external audio devices such as smartphone, computers or tablets. Built-In Recording Feature The built-in song recorder is can be used to capture your performance or as a useful tool for practicing difficult pieces. One song can be saved to the internal memory of the piano, but this capacity can be increased by plugging in a commercially available USB memory stick so that the total number of saved songs is virtually limitless. Metronome There is a built-in metronome that can be used with headphones for practice purposes. Included Accessories AC adaptor*, power cord*, headphones, headphone hanger, attachment screws for headphone hanger, Owner's Manual Optional Accessories USB wireless LAN adaptor (UD-WL01), wireless MIDI adaptor (UD-BT01) Why Buy A Silent Piano Instead Of A Digital Piano? Modern digital pianos have advanced tremendously in recent times, but nothing beats the keyboard response of a true acoustic piano. A silent piano offers a true acoustic piano experience, with a digital sound available for when you need it. The difference is that when playing using the digital sound, you have the same keyboard feel & touch as an acoustic piano. Only higher priced hybrid digital pianos offer a similar keyboard performance to that of a Silent Piano. If you are looking at purchasing a high-end digital piano, then we would recommend that you also consider a silent acoustic piano.

We will need to know the make, model (if known) and serial number of your piano. We consider digital pianos, acoustic pianos, keyboards and even guitars in part exchange! Dimensions & Weight: Width 153cm Height 116cm Depth 58cm Weight: 216kg(476lbs) Two of the Worlds Finest Concert Grand Pianos When in 'silent' mode, the Yamaha P116 SH2 defaults to Yamahas 9-foot Concert Grand Piano bright, rich, and powerful. For a rich, warm sound with a beautiful sonorous bass, the press of a button takes you to the Bosendorfer Imperial Concert Grand Piano. All 88 keys have been sampled individually for the most accurate representation of these exquisite instruments. Sonic Palette Stereophonic Optimizer There are 20 sounds pre-installed to the Yamaha P116 SH2, including a variety of electric pianos, strings, and organs. To make these voices feel and sound more authentic and natural, the stereophonic optimizer reproduces the natural sound distance, making you forget you are wearing headphones and preventing your ears from getting tired after a long practice session. Binaural Sampling The default CFX sound uses Binaural technology when wearing headphones. Specialised microphones placed in the players ears position capture nuances and locational information usually only picked up by the human ear. You truly forget you are wearing headphones when playing with the CFX sound and can practice for much longer periods of time than with standard stereo headphone sampling. Virtual Resonance Modelling One thing many players miss the most when playing a digital instrument are the pianos natural resonance. A grand piano has several areas where sound travels and reverberates, such as the solid spruce soundboard, and even the outer rims of the instrument. Each time you play an acoustic piano, a limitless amount of different resonances and overtones are captured. Yamaha have recreated this in the P116 SH2, thanks to their enhanced Virtual Resonance Modelling. Every element of the acoustic instrument is captured, from the timing of the keys being pressed, to the dampers lifting from the strings and the pedals being pressed. This is captured in great detail across all 88 keys. The result is an authentic and immersive playing experience, filled with expression. Unique Yamaha Technology To further enhance the realistic playing experience when using the P116 SH2 Silent features, Yamahas Smooth Release technology understands the way your finger releases the key, responding to smoother legato playing as well as shorter staccato notes. Key-off samples are actual recordings that capture the subtle changes as the finger is completely lifted away from the key, as the damper felt returns to rest on the string. Sensors under each key detect continuous movement, without affecting the feel of the piano. Infinite levels of expression are therefore possible, in the same way you would expect on a standard acoustic instrument. Similar non-contact Hammer sensors work in the same way to allow both slow and rapid keystrokes, and rapid trills that would not be possible on typical digital pianos. Yamahas Quick Escape System means that, when in silent mode, the hammers and strings are the ideal distance apart, so the quality of touch isnt sacrificed as with other silent models. Bluetooth Audio If you want to play along to backing tracks or songs stored on your mobile device, you can now stream wirelessly via Bluetooth with the Yamaha P116 SH2 system when using headphones. Smart Pianist App Smart Pianist is Yamahas own free app, which enables the player to control functions such as selecting voices or editing the metronome settings, as well as playing along to scores displayed on the Smart Device. The UD-WL01 USB Wireless LAN Adaptor (sold separately) is required to use Smart Pianist over a wireless connection. Simple & Sophisticated Control Panel A sophisticated design and intuitive interface, the control panel blends with the pianos cabinet. Available in white finish for polished white pianos. Connectivity USB to HOST connect to a computer or portable device and record high-quality audio without need for an external interface. AUX OUT play through external speakers / IC recorders AUX IN listen from external devices such as sound source modules and music players MIDI OUT transmit performance information to external devices ie synths MIDI IN receive and playback information from sequencers using the SH2 Tone Generator Recording As well as being able to record directly to the built-in recorder on the piano, and listen back to your performance immediately, you can also record high quality audio to a USB memory stick (not included). The data will be stored as a WAV file, ready to play on a PC or burn to CD or portable music players. Headphones The headphones included with the Yamaha P116 SH2 are open structured meaning they produce an excellent quality of sound, while also minimizing the strain that can be caused by long hours of headphone playing. Metronome The built-in metronome enables the player to practice and listen to precise rhythm while playing. This, along with other features, is accessed most easily via Yamahas Smart Pianist app. How does Yamaha SH2 silent system differ to the cheaper Yamaha SC2 Silent system? Yamahas SC2 Silent System is available on the B series upright pianos, as well as the GB1K baby grand piano. A grand piano has several areas where sound travels and reverberates, such as the solid spruce soundboard, and even the outer rims of the instrument. Each time you play an acoustic piano, a limitless amount of different resonances and overtones are captured. Yamaha have recreated this in the P121 SH2, thanks to their enhanced Virtual Resonance Modelling. Every element of the acoustic instrument is captured, from the timing of the keys being pressed, to the dampers lifting from the strings and the pedals being pressed. This is captured in great detail across all 88 keys. The result is an authentic and immersive playing experience, filled with expression. Unique Yamaha Technology To further enhance the realistic playing experience when using the P121 SH2 Silent features, Yamahas Smooth Release technology understands the way your finger releases the key, responding to smoother legato playing as well as shorter staccato notes. Bluetooth Audio If you want to play along to backing tracks or songs stored on your mobile device, you can now stream wirelessly via Bluetooth with the Yamaha P121 SH2 system when using headphones. Headphones The headphones included with the Yamaha P121 SH2 are open structured meaning they produce an excellent quality of sound, while also minimizing the strain that can be caused by long hours of headphone playing. You will find the SH2 system on the higher quality P, U, YUS, and SE series uprights and the GC and CX series grand pianos.
