Caring For Your Acoustic Piano
Acoustic pianos are beautiful instruments designed to produce a rich and colourful sound through the wooden soundboard, which is considered to be the “heart” of the instrument. Due to the nature of the materials used in the production of acoustic pianos, the environment plays an important role in the wellbeing of the instrument.
Environmental Changes
As the temperature and humidity around an acoustic piano fluctuates, the instrument can experience unusual behaviour. A swift rise in humidity can see the wood within the keys and action mechanism absorb moisture from the air and become sluggish, or sticky. A swing in temperature can cause the piano to drop out of tune, and in the long term drastic temperature changes can lead to problems within the wrest plank and the tuning pins themselves.
How Can I Look After My Piano?
Every home, studio or performance environment will have fluctuations in both the temperature and humidity. The less movement there is, the better your piano will hold its tuning and the less likely you will be to encounter niggling issues such as squeaks, buzzes, rattles or sticky keys. Essentially, the more stable the environment, the less you’ll be calling your tuner out! This digital hygromter monitors the temperature and humidity, and enables you to look back at the minimum and maximum figures over a 24 hour period. This way, you’ll be able to better understand how the room your piano is in is interacting with your piano - and, ultimately, be able to manage this better to keep your piano performing at its best.
What Happens If I Do Have Issues?
Minor changes in the environment are to be expected in any house, and the good news is that the majority of environmental maintenance issues that crop up with acoustic pianos can be swiftly resolved by your tuner/technician. They will usually carry tools with them that are designed to remedy things such as sticky keys, stiff jacks or squeaky pedals and can undertake this work as part of their tuning service.
