Yamaha GCB SH3 Silent Grand Piano; Polished Ebony
£18,749
Yamaha GCB SH3 Silent Grand Piano; Polished Ebony
The Yamaha GCB is Yamaha’s new 151cm baby grand piano, replacing the long-running GB1K. The big change is that the GCB is now made in Japan at Yamaha’s Kakegawa piano factory, alongside the larger GC and CX Series grand pianos.
At just 151cm deep, it remains Yamaha’s most compact grand piano and is designed for homes and other spaces where a larger grand simply isn’t practical. However, the GCB is much more than an updated GB1K. Yamaha has made a number of important changes to the construction, action and overall design, bringing it much closer to the rest of the GC Series.
What is different about the Yamaha GCB?
The previous Yamaha GB1K was manufactured in Indonesia. The new GCB is built in Kakegawa, Japan, and Yamaha now considers it a true member of the GC Series.
Improvements include a Tone Collector, thicker inner rim laminations and an improved Japanese-made grand piano action. These changes are designed to give the GCB greater resonance and a more responsive, controlled feel at the keyboard.
There is also a new five-position sliding music desk, while practical features include a soft-close fallboard, sostenuto pedal and two-position lid prop with a safety stop.
Most importantly, the GCB still occupies very little floor space for an acoustic grand piano.
What does the Yamaha GCB sound and feel like?
For a 151cm baby grand, the GCB produces an impressively full and clear sound. Yamaha has designed the soundboard, frame, braces and back posts to work together as a complete structure, helping the piano make the most of its relatively short string length and compact soundboard.
The action is made by Yamaha in Japan and each GCB is individually regulated and voiced at the Kakegawa factory before leaving production.
As with any baby grand, a larger instrument such as the Yamaha GC1 or GC2 will naturally have advantages in areas such as bass depth and overall scale. The appeal of the GCB is that it gives you the look, playing position and mechanical feel of a proper acoustic grand piano in a cabinet only 151cm deep.
Who should buy a Yamaha GCB?
The Yamaha GCB is particularly well suited to home pianists who want a genuine acoustic grand but don't have room for a larger instrument.
It is also worth considering if you have previously looked at the Yamaha GB1K but would prefer a Japanese-made piano, or if you like the GC Series but find the 161cm GC1 too large for your room.
For pianists moving from an upright piano to their first grand, the GCB is a very manageable size and offers the faster repetition and different playing experience of a grand piano action without requiring a particularly large room.
Is the Yamaha GCB made in Japan?
Yes. The Yamaha GCB is manufactured at Yamaha's Kakegawa factory in Japan, alongside the Yamaha GC and CX Series.
This is an important difference from the outgoing Yamaha GB1K, which was manufactured in Indonesia.
Is there a Yamaha GCB Silent Piano?
Yes. The Yamaha GCB SH3 adds Yamaha's current SH3 Silent Piano system – the same system used on the Yamaha GC1, GC2 and CX Series Silent models.
When Silent mode is selected, the hammers are stopped before they strike the strings, allowing you to play through headphones while still using the GCB's real acoustic grand piano keyboard and action.
It's a particularly useful option if you want an acoustic grand at home but need the freedom to practise quietly in the evening or without disturbing other people in the house.

Piano Delivery Questionnaire
Prior to delivery, we will ask you to complete a short Piano Delivery Questionnaire. This allows us to assess access arrangements and ensure the safe delivery and positioning of your instrument.
This helps protect both your property and your piano whilst ensuring our delivery team arrives fully prepared.
Second-Hand & Oversized Products
Our standard FREE delivery over £250 offer does not apply to all second-hand or oversized products.
Additional delivery charges apply to:
- All second-hand keyboards
- Some oversized products measuring more than 120cm in length
- Products requiring specialist handling or delivery
Where applicable, the delivery charge will be calculated automatically at checkout based on the items in your basket and your delivery postcode.
If you're unsure about the delivery charge for a particular instrument, please contact us before ordering and we'll be happy to advise.
Pre-Orders & Out of Stock Items
If you order a product that is temporarily out of stock, we will contact you as soon as possible to confirm the expected lead time.
If you would like to check availability before placing your order, our sales team will be happy to help.
For many popular or newly released products, we can also take a small deposit to reserve your place in the queue ahead of new stock arriving.
Order Tracking
Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive a confirmation email containing your tracking number and courier details.
You can track your shipment directly with the courier once dispatched.
