Read About the Roland Fantom EX

Since its launch in 2019, the Roland FANTOM has gained global recognition for its versatile range of high-quality sounds, robust synthesis capabilities, exceptional playability, and intuitive user interface. The FANTOM EX builds upon the original model by enhancing the core features with Roland's Analog Circuit Behaviour (ACB) engine and a variety of sound expansion packs, including the newly developed JX-3P ACB Expansion. The series also introduces new effects and numerous workflow improvements.

Each model in the FANTOM EX series boasts the most extensive collection of premium sound engines available in any hardware instrument, featuring Roland’s ACB, ZEN-Core, V-Piano, SuperNATURAL, and Virtual ToneWheel technologies. These inspire users across all musical styles with over 7000 genre-defining Roland sounds and additional premium content on Roland Cloud. Standard sound expansions include JUPITER-8, SH-101, JX-3P ACB Expansions; n/zyme, JD-800, JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, JX-8P, and SH-101 Model Expansions; the German Concert V-Piano Expansion 01; and the SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3 Expansion.

The advanced custom processors in the FANTOM EX ensure smooth and precise operation, allowing for extensive polyphony and uninterrupted patch transitions. The synthesizer offers multiple simultaneous effects, including new high-quality reverbs and enhanced Master FX for refining the overall sound. An analog filter adds extra warmth and texture to the tones.

Designed as the nucleus of any production setup, the FANTOM EX facilitates direct sound manipulation and musical development through a user-friendly panel equipped with buttons, knobs, and sliders. The colour touchscreen adapts to support various tasks and can be customised with personal images for the screensaver and startup display.

The FANTOM EX also includes comprehensive onboard sampling and composition tools for rapid sound creation and quick song arrangement. Workflow options feature the classic Roland TR-REC step sequencer, real-time recording with piano roll editing, and 16 RGB pads for activating sounds, samples, and clips.

Integration into computer-based production environments is seamless with dedicated modes for popular software platforms such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, MainStage, Cubase, and Studio One. The built-in 16x3 audio/MIDI USB interface allows users to blend software and hardware sounds, manage sequencer parts and DAW sources, and apply FANTOM EX effects.

The extensive connectivity options on the FANTOM EX rear panel include XLR combo connectors, eight 1/4-inch outputs, MIDI I/O, and dual CV/Gate outputs for interfacing with a wide array of equipment.

Each model in the FANTOM EX series is equipped with a premium keyboard with aftertouch. The FANTOM 8 EX features an 88-key hammer-action keyboard for a superior weighted feel, while the 61-key FANTOM 6 EX and 76-key FANTOM 7 EX offer semi-weighted synth action. Built on decades of Roland's expertise, these keyboards provide unparalleled expressive playability.

As of November 2023, the FANTOM EX Upgrade on Roland Cloud enables owners of original FANTOM 6/7/8 models to equip their instruments with the new EX features, including JUPITER-8, SH-101, and JX-3P ACB Expansions, n/zyme and JD-800 Model Expansions, two new grand pianos, and all other EX enhancements.
