Gibson Les Paul 1952 Tribute Prototype Goldtop | Second Hand
The Gibson Les Paul 1952 Tribute Prototype Goldtop serves as a poignant homage to the genesis of the most iconic solid-body electric guitar in history.
Originally introduced in 1952, the Goldtop was the result of a landmark collaboration between Gibson’s president Ted McCarty and the legendary guitarist and inventor Les Paul. This specific Tribute model was produced to honour Les Paul’s passing and celebrate the experimental spirit of those early years, meticulously recreating the specs of the very first production runs. It represents the transition from Gibson’s archtop heritage into the world of high-sustain solid-body instruments, a move that fundamentally altered the trajectory of popular music and instrument design for decades to come.
The construction of this model is rooted in the traditional formula of a solid mahogany back paired with a carved maple top, finished in the timeless Bullion Gold lacquer that gave the original its nickname. Unlike later versions that utilized a Stop Bar or Tune-o-matic bridge, this tribute features the period-correct Trapeze tailpiece. This hardware choice is a defining characteristic of the 1952 design, where the strings are wrapped under the bridge bar, contributing to a unique tension and a woody, resonant acoustic quality. The neck is carved to a substantial 1952 profile, providing a hefty, period-accurate grip that players of early vintage Gibsons prize for its comfort and significant contribution to the guitar's natural sustain.
The 1952 Tribute is driven by a pair of P-90 pickups, which were the standard for Gibson before the invention of the humbucker. These single-coil units are renowned for their "creamy" yet aggressive character, offering more bite and mid-range growl than a traditional thin single-coil while maintaining a clarity that full-sized humbuckers sometimes lack. The electronics are wired to provide a wide dynamic range, allowing the player to clean up the signal via the volume pots or push a tube amp into a harmonically rich overdrive. This instrument is more than just a historical replica; it is a professional-grade tool that captures the raw, unfiltered energy of the early 1950s, making it an essential piece for collectors and serious players alike.
