Wampler Ego Compressor Pedal

The Ego Compressor from Wampler quickly became an industry standard in guitar pedal compression. It did so by delivering really full, clear and organic compression effect alongside a whole new level of control that was fully embraced by guitar players.

What is Compression?

Compression is everywhere and yet, for the uninitiated, it can be quite difficult to define. It can be a very subtle effect to sweeten and smoothen a guitar signal or it can be used very liberally to create an ultra-glassy, articulate ice pick attack.

The general principle of compression is to level out the notes in your playing to make them smoother and more of a consistent volume. It does so by bringing up the volume of the quieter parts of your playing and bringing down the volume on the louder parts. This makes it so there are no crazy loud volume spikes and no inaudibly quiet sections. This is a pretty essential process in recording and can be very handy live too.

The Sweet Spot

Compression is the main ingredient in the secret sauce that presents itself when you turn a good valve amp up loud to the holy grail of “the sweet-spot”. This is the spot where the amp is working hard and, as a result, causing the notes to bloom beautifully and smooths the notes out in a really musical fashion. This often also has the added bonus of making your playing feel buttery and effortless.

The Ego Compressor works hard to provide you just that magical feeling of turning up a lovely old valve amp without the stress of having to remortgage your house to afford one or permanently ruining your hearing. It gives you a really lively, organic feeling compression rather than just mechanically smoothing out the volume level of the notes played.

Dynamics

One thing that is easily lost when dealing with compression is playing dynamics. When everything is being smoothed and levelled out, it is easy to lose the emotive language that volume provides to your playing. Wampler has combatted this by providing the ability to add a clean blend back into your playing. This allows you to still get all the benefits of the compressor (namely picking up the quieter parts of your playing and add sustain) whilst controlling the amount of squash that comes along with that. So you can go from dripping wet, twangy country squash to a studio ready, thickening compression in no time.

You’d be hard pressed to find a more versatile, dynamic compressor out there. Especially with the Ego’s form factor and convenience. It really makes a great option for those players who want a more subtle “always on” compressor to those who want to add more of an intense compression “effect” to their playing.
