Wampler Mini Ego Compressor

The Ego Compressor by Wampler quickly became the go-to compressor for many guitarists and now, it comes in a bite-size format! The original Ego Compressor is a titan in the world of compression and Wampler have left one in the tumble dryer too long in order to miniaturise it for a more convenient footprint.

What is Compression?

Compression is everywhere and yet, for the uninitiated, it can be quite difficult to define. It can be a very subtle effect to sweeten and smoothen a guitar signal or it can be used very liberally to create an ultra-glassy, articulate ice pick attack.

The general principle of compression is to level out the notes in your playing to make them smoother and more of a consistent volume. It does so by bringing up the volume of the quieter parts of your playing and bringing down the volume on the louder parts. This makes it so there are no crazy loud volume spikes and no inaudibly quiet sections. This is a pretty essential process in recording and can be very handy live too.

Mini-Me

The Ego Compressor Mini has managed to squeeze all of the functionality of it’s big brother into its reduced size. In lieu of 5 knobs of the original, Wampler have opted for 2-way switches for the “tone” and “attack” controls. This still allows you to select the brightness and attack speed of the pedal without occupying an exorbitant amount of real estate.

The three knobs left intact from the original are for the volume, sustain and the blend controls. The blend control is one of the main ingredients that goes into making the Ego so well regarded. It allows you to blend in your dry signal back into the pedal which preserves your playing dynamics with full, exact precision and control. It’s one of the many reasons that Wampler’s Ego Compressor is so highly regarded.
