Way Huge Smalls Swollen Pickle Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal
Consolidated Swelling
The Way Huge Smalls Swollen Pickle is a little box which packs a huge and versatile punch. Whether looking for vintage murk or modern clarity this is a pedal that can deliver it all. The power of this pedal (as with practically every other Way Huge offering) is in its ability to offer swaths of power and versatility whilst being immensely simple to use. Through three knobs and two switches you can dial in a whole universe of absolutely killer fuzz tone without compromising an ounce of authenticity.
Control Knobs
First things first, the control knobs. Top-left you’ll find the loudness knob. This one sets the volume level of the pedal. There is more than enough volume here to hammer any amp and so this is a very expressive control. Next up, top-right, is the sustain control. This sets the amount of sustain that the pedal throws forth. This can be used in conjunction with the loudness control to dial in the amount of aggression and power in extremely dynamic ways. Here is where you sculpt the rough outline which in and of itself is very powerful and fully-fledged.
Between the two primary controls sits the filter control. This you could think of as a tone control. This control will darken the pedal to vintage murky depths of brighten it to shimmering, articulate, modern highs. Again, the main takeaway is that simplicity and focus can yield powerful and wide-ranging results.
Control Switches
Either side of the filter knob you’ll find two switches. These are on/off controls which toggle a feature from the Swollen Pickle Smalls’ big brother. On the left is the crunch control. When the switch is flicked up you engage the pre-sculpted crunch filter into play. This will crush up the pedals sound and increase the amount of compression on hand. To the right of the filter control you’ll find the scoop switch. This toggles in a mid-scoop for those scooped tones which behave beautifully with fuzz.
Crucially, with both of these switches down, these filters are inactive and the pedal functions really simply as a 3-knob fuzz. There is still tonnes of depth and dynamism even without the switches. However, with the switches engaged, you get even more of a tonal landscape opened up to you.
The All-Rounder
The bottom line with this pedal is that it is a true and killer fuzz pedal that doesn’t try to emulate anything in particular. Rather, it produces incredible fuzz tones across a vast array of styles and flavours to suit any player and any genre. You can tap into Fuzz Face and Big Muff tones if you try to find them, but this pedal is one to be thought of more or less in its own right. It sounds glorious wherever you set it. It can deliver a quiet growl, or it can be dialled up to earth shaking degrees. The simplicity of its controls really help to ensure its approachable and fun to interact with. It’s a joy to delve in and see what you’ll discover.
