Hammond XK-7 and XK-7D: A Closer Look

For decades, musicians have tried to capture the magic of a great vintage Hammond in a practical, reliable format. Many instruments have come close in sound. Very few have ever come close in feel.

The new Hammond XK-7 and XK-7D change that.

These are not just the latest generation of clonewheel organs - they represent a fundamental step forward in how a digital Hammond is designed, built and played. With a completely new sound engine, new multi-contact keyboards, and obsessive attention to the electro-mechanical behaviour of the original instruments, the XK-7 series is the most authentic Hammond Hammond have ever produced.

In our view, this is the first portable Hammond that genuinely deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as a great B-3.

Two Models, One Philosophy

The XK-7 range is available in two formats:

  • XK-7 — Single manual
  • XK-7D — Dual manual

Both use exactly the same sound engine, modelling, effects and technology. The difference is purely about how you want to play.

The XK-7 is perfect for players who want a high-end, portable single-manual Hammond, whether for gigging, studio work or home use.

The XK-7D is designed for players who want the full dual-manual console experience in a modern, manageable format.

Unlike older systems, the single manual model is not designed to be expanded into a dual-manual later — instead, Hammond have made two fully integrated, purpose-built instruments. You simply choose the format that suits your playing style.

A Completely New Sound Engine: VEM

At the heart of both models is Hammond’s new VEM (Virtual Electro Mechanical) sound engine.

This doesn’t just model the sound of tonewheels — it models the entire system:

  • The tonewheel generators
  • The interaction between multiple notes
  • Current flow and voltage behaviour
  • Leakage, foldback and crosstalk
  • Transformer and valve preamp behaviour
  • Compression, saturation and dynamic instability

Even the tiny inconsistencies that make vintage Hammonds feel alive — things that would normally be considered “faults” — are recreated in real time.

The result is an organ that doesn’t just sound right in isolation, but behaves correctly when you play chords, use percussion, or dig in dynamically.

The Breakthrough: A Keyboard That Finally Feels Like a Hammond

One of the biggest weaknesses of most clonewheel organs has always been the keyboard. They can sound convincing — but they don’t quite respond like the real thing.

The XK-7 and XK-7D fix this properly.

They use a brand new 6-contact “6L” waterfall keyboard, with:

  • Six contacts per key (previous models had three)
  • Longer keys
  • Vintage-correct pivot point

This means the keys trigger and respond like a real console Hammond. Light playing, repeated notes, palm techniques, smears and glissandos all behave the way organists expect.

The difference is not subtle. If you’re used to a real B-3, this is the first portable Hammond that truly feels familiar under your hands.

Real Hammond Character — Including the Imperfections

Vintage Hammonds are not sterile instruments. They wobble, breathe, and subtly change character depending on what and how you play.

The XK-7 series models:

  • Wow & flutter from tonewheel rotation
  • Individual wheel level and leakage
  • Foldback behaviour
  • Key contact timing differences
  • Transformer and valve preamp saturation (AO-28)

This is why chords “bloom”, why percussion interacts properly with drawbars, and why the instrument feels alive instead of static.

And if you want to go deeper, the customisation goes far beyond anything previously offered in a Hammond.

Rotary Speaker Options: Built-In or External Leslie

Both models include a real 11-pin Leslie connector, so you can connect a proper Leslie cabinet exactly as you would with a vintage console.

When you can’t, the built-in Leslie simulator is the best Hammond have ever produced, modelling:

  • Rotor behaviour
  • Cabinet reflections
  • Air movement
  • Stereo mic placement and mic type

You can go from smooth jazz swirl to aggressive rock grind with a few simple adjustments.

More Than Just a Drawbar Organ

In addition to classic tonewheel sounds, the XK-7 and XK-7D also include:

  • Vintage transistor combo organs (Italian, UK and Japanese styles)
  • A full pipe organ section with 40 stops, including theatre organ sounds

This makes the XK-7 series far more versatile than a traditional Hammond — without compromising its core identity.

The Complete Organ Experience

For players who want the full experience, both models can be used with the XPK-250W mk3 pedalboard, which uses a multi-contact system to reproduce the behaviour of vintage pedalboards.

Together, this creates a genuinely complete modern Hammond system with proper technique, response and feel.
